Young Padres fans score big!

Diego and Jason are big fans of the Padres. They missed out on the July 4th game, but not to worry. Art Haeussler got Padres Cy Young Award winner Randy Jones to autograph Baseball Cards for them and they also got new Padres caps.
This is the card the boys are holding. See anything strange about it? Yep. That’s Randy in a New York Mets uniform.

Old Timers, New Friends

Ron Hoffman & Carl Curry. A couple of our members have a lot more in common that they thought. On Thursday Ron Hoffman and Carl Curry met in the Club Room. A couple of retired Marines, they began the usual conversation, “When were you in the Corps?, Where were you stationed?, What rank were you?, etc., etc., etc.” By the end of the questions they discovered: They both joined the same year and were in for 24 years (1954-1978); they were both enlisted and commissioned as LDO’s and both reached the rank of Captain. Although they had different MOS’s, Ron an Engineer and Carl in the Air Wing, their careers were remarkably similar. Amazing similarities, and by a chance meeting at the post, two members are now good friends.

November 17, 2017 – Secretary of Defense James Mattis, United States Marine Corps (retired), awards the Bronze Star to Gunnery Sgt. Kendall Haff, United States Marine Corps (retired), for his actions during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm
Following the awards ceremony members of 1/7 had a reception at MCRD San Diego. Front row center are SECDEF Mattis and Huff. Back row 2nd from right is Eric “Mo” Motier VFW Post 7041 and Legion Post 365 member.
Retired General Mattis, Jeannie & Mo Motier. Mo recalled General Mattis words at the beginning of the War in Iraq when he told the troops that 1/7 was “the tip of the spear”. If you know Mo, you know he took that nickname to heart and has been the “tip of the spear” in so many projects here at the post over the years. When Mo read of the General’s marriage, he texted a congratulatory message to him. The General texted back thanking him. Pretty cool to be able to TEXT the former General and Secretary of Defense. “Oo-Rah, Mo!”

Post 44 Redmond, Oregon
While on a trip recently Mark Baca and Cyndy Skultety visited American Legion Post 44 in Redmond, Oregon. Nothing unusual about that – except for the Post name. No, that isn’t the Ray Johnson who is a member here in Vista, but they thought it was close enough to buy a plate for OUR Ray.

Take A Break and Relax

This bench was made by Mark Baca and donated to the Post. A few months ago Mark volunteered to make a new bench to replace the old one. The new bench sits outside the building near the handicapped parking spot by the North entrance. Built from all recycled materials, the bench is a nice place to relax, make a phone call, or just take a short rest.
