Post 365 General Meeting September 16, 2023

Commander Brad Sakemi opens the September 2023 General Meeting.
Service Officer Art Haeussler gave the membership an update on the PACT Act and bills that are working their way thru Congress.
Post Historian Ray Johnson gave a presentation on the September 2nd 1945 surrender ceremony that took place on board the USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay. The Japanese delegation signed the surrender document at a small area just yards from where a Kamikaze plane had crashed just weeks before the war ended.
Ray also gave a brief history of the model of the USS Missouri (BB-63) that had been on display at Carl’s Tavern for more that 30 years. When the tavern closed it was relocated to The Greenbriar Tavern in Oceanside and a few years later it was presented to the Post at the Grand Opening on 10 November 2010
These photos show the condition of the model when it was undergoing restoration. Removal of the dust and nicotine stains, remanufacturing of lost parts and repainting took more than a year.
Dan, a post member and US Army veteran presents a flag from his Special Forces unit to the post.
It will be added to other unit flags on display in the patio area.
Post 365 Auxiliary Secretary/Treasurer Karen Bowman announced the Wreaths Across America campaign will begin at the November Meeting. She looks forward to another banner year of donations to place wreaths at the Fort Rosecrans and Mira Mar National Cemeteries.

Celebrating Tom Morton’s Birthday August 8, 2023

Tom Morton, Senior E-5 of the U.S. Armed Forces
Rest in Peace, Tom
On August 8th, a group of the Carl’s Taven Refugees gathered at American Legion Post 365 in Carl’s Corner and raised their glasses (and bottles), at 3:00 PM in honor of Tom Morton. The two photos below were taken to document the event. Why two? Well, the second photo shows a latecomer, Steve Nicas, who was forgiven his tardiness after he explained why he couldn’t be there on time. He was celebrating another birthday, his Mom shares the same birthdate with Tom, although she is a few years senior. Steve’s Mom  is 102 years young! We also received a phone call from Russ Stevenson who toasted Tom from his local watering hole in Texas.
Pictured (L-R) are Post 365 Commander Brad Sakemi, Paul Williams, Spike Harvey, Leon Guerra,Jay Santa Cruz, Kevin Gascon, Ray Johnson

Post 365 General Meeting and Post Commander History July 15, 2023

Post 365 Commander Brad Sakemi opens the General Meeting.
Service Officer Art Haeussler gives a report covering, among other things, the importance of making sure your DD-214 is available to your family – and they know where it is.
Additionally, Art spoke of the Be The One  program, a program that destigmatizes asking for mental health support, provide peer-to-peer support and resources, and educate everyone on how they can Be the One. Why is this a priority right now? Today, the No. 1 issue facing the veteran community is suicide, according to the National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report. It is estimated that between 17 and 22 veterans or servicemembers take their lives each day. That’s more than 6,000 annually. The rate of suicide for veterans is more than 50% higher than that of non-veteran adults.
This meeting marked the return of Ray Johnson as Post Historian. His first presentation told members about the installation of our new Commander, a US Army Veteran, the first one in the past 21 years.
The last US Army Commander was Fernando Gallardo, who was Post 365 Commander in 2002-2003.
Historian Ray Johnson introduces Esther Davis, daughter of 2002-03 Commander Fernando Gallardo to Post 365 Commander Brad Sakemi
Esther Davis thanks the post and tells the audience about her Dad and how much he loved being the Commander and how he devoted so much of his time to make the Post a place to come visit and be with friends.
