VFW General Meeting October 14, 2023

Adjutant Mark Storsteen calls the roll for attendance at the November meeting.
Service Officer Art Haeussler brought the membership up to date on the problems we are experiencing with many bills that are stuck in Congress due to their in-house problems. Also, a brief update on the Camp Lejeune water problems that can be addressed thru the Camp Lejeune Act that are available to not only the Service Member, but, in the event of that service members death, claims may also be initiated by surviving family members. For more info contact Art.
Quartermaster Mo Motier brought the membership up to date on the Quarterly Audit and also announced the Shrimp Boil Event hours will be 2-7 pm on November 11th. He asked that as many members volunteer to help out as this event requires as many helping hands as possible.
Karen Bowman announced to the membership that the Wreaths Across America program is accepting donations for this years event. The VFW and MOC Pup Tent 40 both made $1,530.00 donations.
Bruce Mackamul made a motion for a $1,530.00 donation to the Wreaths Across America Campaign.
The motion passed unanimously.
Acting Sgt-at-Arms Raymond Johnson drapes the Charter for Jerry Moore and Skip Marks. Skip Marks, a member of both the VFW and MOC Pup Tent 40 was an active member who was always on hand to help out with special events. He was always the top ticket seller for many of the events we sponsored.
Jerry Moore, US Navy Retired, was a Vietnam Veteran. Jerry was a key figure in the transformation of the post building when it opened in 2010. The electrical problems with the building were many and critical. Jerry spend many hours working with the help of SDG&E to make repairs to the building and getting it ready for the Grand Opening.
As Christmas approached in 2012, American Legion Post 365 Commander Chris Yates thought it would be fun to decorate the Christmas Tree. The Auxiliary had set the tree up in the Post Clubroom area and left the installation of the Christmas tree lights to the Commander. Chris spent about an hour putting the tree lights on and then flipped the switch to turn them on. No Lights. Chris began a systematic approach to resolve the problem by checking all the plugs between each string of lights, several times to no avail. Then he thought maybe one of the lights was out, that might cause the entire string to not operate. Tweaking each bulb to try to get them all to light up proved fruitless. The always calm and collected Chris was becoming frustrated and a few more Miller Lites were needed to proceed. Finally, in desperation, he asked Jerry Moore to check out his work. Jerry, a retired US Navy with an electrician MOS walked calmly around the tree, studied it for a minute or two, and then, calmly held up the plug and said to Chris, “It always works better when you plug it in.” Jerry was treated to several cans of Coors Banquet beer for his assistance.
Jasper, a service dog for one of our members never misses a meeting.
